Blood Sugar

nutrition labelYour body uses food as fuel, nothing more nothing less, it feeds our muscles it strengthens our bones it keeps our skin healthy…..it goes on and on, so when you look at food from this perspective, why do we eat so much processed foods?, pumped full of salt, sugar and empty calories. In my personal opinion many people have a massive in-balance in blood sugar levels, so what does this blood sugar imbalance mean in terms of what we eat? well I will explain below:

Eating high sugar and salt laden foods with little nutritional value does the following-

Gives you a big insulin spike (High blood sugar) where the fast digesting carbohydrates are released way too quickly into the system, which in turn the body looks to use the fuel straight away and if activity levels are very low at this time, you run the risk of that unused energy being converted to body fat.

After these spike the blood sugar level crash and we then in turn crave more fast digesting carbohydrates and fatty foods to bring the levels back up.

This then starts the process all over again as the brains is asking for food and sending messages that ‘Fast food’ would be the best option, why? Because the blood sugars have dropped and your body knows that this food will bring it right up

Your body will ask for what it needs and I always say listen to your body at all times.

However that being said, in this situation the body is sending the wrong messages to the brain due to the massive imbalance in sugar levels and the only way to balance them once more is to change your diet and cut out these ‘empty’ sugar filled calories.

As I said earlier your body uses food as fuel, take a closer look at the labels at the super market, what you should be looking at more than the fat content is the sugar content, on every label you will see on the nutritional facts
For example:
Carbohydrate-34grams
Of which sugars-34grams

Now this may seem obvious to you now but how many times have you bypassed carbohydrates and just looked at the fat content and said ‘hey honey this has 0% fat!’ yea sure that’s all well and good but trust me whilst the fat has been taken out, sugar has been pumped in.37 grams of sugar is way too much and you need to be aware that all your hard work in the gym could be affected by not reading a label.
All of you reading this work hard to make changes and you pay your membership every month, don’t waste any more time! I want you to succeed and you owe it to your body to feed it what it needs and not what it wants, and in time your sugar levels will balance and your cravings for empty calories will disappear.

If anyone has any questions or wants to sit down for a chat regarding nutrition more in depth, feel free to ask.
